Arab American Civic Council Calls for the Protection of Students and their Free Speech Rights on University Campuses

The Arab American Civic Council is alarmed by the recent instances of police abuse targeting students exercising their First Amendment rights on university campuses across our state. Specifically, we are deeply concerned about the recent events at the University of Southern California and Pomona College, where peaceful demonstrations to oppose U.S. complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza have been met with excessive force and punitive measures by law enforcement.

At the University of Southern California, members of the Los Angeles Police Department detained numerous demonstrators during a protest against the genocide in Gaza, resulting in clashes and escalating tensions on campus. Similarly, at Pomona College, 20 students were arrested for peacefully occupying the office of University President Gabrielle Starr in solidarity with Gaza. These incidents represent a blatant violation of students’ constitutional right to protest and express their views without fear of repression or retaliation.

It is imperative that our elected representatives take decisive action to hold police departments accountable for their egregious conduct and ensure that such abuses do not continue with impunity. Students have the fundamental right to engage in peaceful protest and advocacy, and law enforcement must respect and protect these rights, rather than suppress them through intimidation and violence.

Furthermore, we are troubled by the development in the form of Senate Bill 1287, which poses a significant threat to free speech and academic freedom on university campuses. This bill would unduly restrict students’ ability to engage in open dialogue and debate on critical issues, including matters of social justice and human rights. The passage of SB 1287 would have a chilling effect on free expression and undermine the foundational principles of higher education in California.

We call on our elected representatives to take immediate action to address these urgent concerns:

  • Investigate and hold accountable law enforcement agencies responsible for the excessive use of force against students exercising their First Amendment rights on university campuses.
  • Encourage University Administrations to facilitate unfettered expression of students’ free speech rights, free from intimidation or harassment, and urge them to foster open dialogue  with students rather than resorting to involving law enforcement.
  • Oppose legislation that threatens free speech rights and defends the rights of students to engage in robust debate and activism without fear of censorship or reprisal.

By taking decisive action to safeguard the constitutional rights of students and uphold the principles of free speech and academic freedom, we can ensure that our university campuses remain safe spaces for students to express their opposition genocide and vibrant hubs of learning, dialogue, and social change.
